The king is dead.

Long live the king:

“Elwood, a two-year-old Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix, has been crowned the world’s ugliest dog. The mutt won the award on Friday, at the annual ugly dog contest at the Marin-Sonoma County Fair in California.”

I just saw this on Cute Overload, and it very effectively relieved my post-work fug:

It’s originally from Channel 101, but easier to share on YouTube. :)

Pure cute

June 18, 2007

Milly the hen at Hencam.co.uk hatched a small yellow parcel of pure cuteness this afternoon. Possibly more than one chick has hatched, but she’s been protecting the nest very closely so proud hen-guardians Neil and Scarlet haven’t been able to tell. They did manage to get pictures from when the chick poked its head out for its web debut:

Milly and chick

Milly and chick

Milly and chick

I must now take my leave, for I am about to expire from the cuteness.

***UPDATE!***
Another two chicks have been hatched, and there are photos on the blog! This morning, I thought I was going to have to tell my boss I was late because of a chick…

***Another update***
This all ended rather horribly; the crack fox got them. But I’m going to leave the post here simply for the times when I need to make myself cry, but don’t have any toenails left to yank out with pliers.

Update:
I has been in ur internets, being oversensitive. I removed the above for a bit because someone linked to it from a review of Year Zero by NIN. The reviewer wasn’t keen on YZ and I thought that perhaps they thought I was mocking NIN and that’s why they linked to it…or something. Gah I don’t know. I’m not cut out for the blogosphere, I’m too paranoid. Anyway, turns out the editor person linked to it because they thought it was funny. So now I am chuffed, and managed to restore the post after my friend scraped the remains of it from his feed reader.

The End.

Oh here’s the mini-response-review I wrote anyway, with my thoughts on YZ:

I think it’s excellent. It might not have the obvious drums and guitar type stuff we’re used to, but there isn’t a single dud track on it, as far as I’m concerned. But each to their own I guess.
I also don’t think Trent has rejected anything he did before he was sober. He may regret some of it personally but not creatively. The fact that the stuff he is doing now is so markedly different isn’t a rejection of the old stuff, it’s an artist growing and taking a different direction. Year Zero is one of the best albums ever released, by NIN or anyone else.

Hot Fuzz

June 9, 2007

hot and fuzzies

Just watched Hot Fuzz on DVD. Really wanted to see it at the cinema but cinemas stress me out. I won’t go into why, as describing my social anxieties will just make you hate me.

Hot Fuzz was awesome. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be, because how would they live up to Shaun of the Dead? Well they managed it. I laughed out loud frequently, at one point so loudly that it set the neighbour’s dog off. There are so many references and jokes and homages and stuff, it’s going to stand up to multiple watchings easily. It’s also very twisty, I couldn’t have predicted the end at all. It has that same feel as Shaun, where it gets pretty ridiculous but still manages to keep you engaged with the drama. So much so that when the jokes happen you laugh even harder. There were some awesome perfomances as well, pretty much everyone was someone. Adam Buxton was fantastic, he has a really gory death in the film, which he should be very proud of. But he is a brilliant character actor and I hope he gets more roles on the strength of this.

I got the Special Edition 2 disc version, so I have heaps of extras to watch. Including four commentaries! That’s why I love Pegg, Wright and Frost so much, they understand their audience. I adore DVD commentaries, and outtakes, and all the other stuff. Cheered me right up this has.

I dun a film review! Yayzers!
