Update:
I has been in ur internets, being oversensitive. I removed the above for a bit because someone linked to it from a review of Year Zero by NIN. The reviewer wasn’t keen on YZ and I thought that perhaps they thought I was mocking NIN and that’s why they linked to it…or something. Gah I don’t know. I’m not cut out for the blogosphere, I’m too paranoid. Anyway, turns out the editor person linked to it because they thought it was funny. So now I am chuffed, and managed to restore the post after my friend scraped the remains of it from his feed reader.

The End.

Oh here’s the mini-response-review I wrote anyway, with my thoughts on YZ:

I think it’s excellent. It might not have the obvious drums and guitar type stuff we’re used to, but there isn’t a single dud track on it, as far as I’m concerned. But each to their own I guess.
I also don’t think Trent has rejected anything he did before he was sober. He may regret some of it personally but not creatively. The fact that the stuff he is doing now is so markedly different isn’t a rejection of the old stuff, it’s an artist growing and taking a different direction. Year Zero is one of the best albums ever released, by NIN or anyone else.

First of all, thank you for your humor and good natured attitude about all of this I am part pawn in that I had nothing to do with the link, I’m just the writer. With all of that said… I didn’t feel it necessary to tell everyone this but I am a huge nin fan. I own everything Trent’s ever put out: remixes, singles, e.p.’s, both dvd’s and a plethora of other merch. I’m not turning on Trent. I will buy any record he puts out from now until one us is dead. And I have read interviews where he disparages downward and the fragile. I’m weird in that the fragile is my favorite nin record. Not many agree but if you can stand to listen to it all the way through it’s an absolute masterpiece. BUT, Trent is a man and he and all the rest of us should be comfortable criticizing works he makes available to the public. No artist should be untouchable. We all need to make ourselves accountable. If he can trash my favorite record, I can trash his. This said, I promise that I will listen to this record more and if my opinion changes I will ammend my statements. Thanks for listening.

    Hi
Thanks for commenting. I agree with your thoughts on accountability and so on. I don’t have issue with people criticising NIN, if that’s how they truly feel about things.
I can honestly say though, from hearing the first track released on Myspace, I was in love with Year Zero.
When I bought it, I had that (now rare) experience with a new record, where you are blown away and know that you’ve got something really special in your hands. I got very excited about YZ, and it seems to get better with every listening. I followed the ARG from the start as well (lots about it on http://www.ninwiki.com). It’s such a different direction for NIN to go in, but it feels right to me.

If this sounds patronising I really don’t mean it to, but I really hope that a couple more listens will change your mind. It almost breaks my heart that someone who loves NIN as much as me hasn’t had the same experience of this record.

By the way, we both must be weird, because The Fragile is my favourite as well! It’s a beautiful record.
